Three Roots Capital Online Video Series – “Financing My Business”

This video series covers four areas associated with the capitalization and operational financing of a business.  The four areas are:

  • “A Survey of Possible Capital Sources, Timing, and Costs”
  • “Preparing to Access Capital: Bookkeeping/Financials”
  • “Equity as a Source of Capital”
  • “Debt as a Source of Capital”

Each area is covered by a video interview conducted by Three Roots Capital with one or more subject matter experts. They can be watched as full-length videos of approximately an hour each, or as shorter 2-9 minute sub-section videos that can be watched over multiple visits.

A Survey of Possible Capital Sources, Timing, and Costs

This session will cover the concept of the funding continuum by identifying the various types of capital, when they are most appropriate to be used during a company’s lifecycle, and their typical costs.

Randy Smith made Knoxville home upon completing his accounting studies at the University of Tennessee. After spending 15 years as a CPA he transitioned to the entrepreneurial side where, as CFO, he guided a healthcare software company through a successful exit. Preparing to Access Capital: Bookkeeping/Financials

This session focuses on what business owners need to do, and have in place, in preparation to successfully raise capital to finance their business.

Stephen Arnold has extensive experience in capital fundraising and M&A and will share his knowledge and his experience from medical technology and capital equipment companies, the need for bookkeeping and preparing financials, the tools used to accomplish this and options to get help with these functions.

This session focuses on answering questions about equity investment such as “how do you attract equity investment”; “what is due diligence”; “how long does it take to get an equity investment”; “is there a bad fit for equity investment”, among others.

Geoff Robson Responsible for day to day operations of an angel investor fund called, The Lighthouse Fund, in Knoxville, TN.  His duties include investor relations/management, sourcing/vetting potential investments, and portfolio management. Geoff has Big Four audit experience with Ernst and Young, was a member of the management team at CSI where the company IPO’d on the NASDAQ in 1995 and sold to Emerson Electric in 1998 driving a 15X return to investors. He has lots of private industry financial and fundraising experience. 

Grady Vanderhoofven Founder and CEO of Three Roots Capital, has more than 20 years of experience in venture capital and private equity, including debt and equity investing in predominantly low income and/or rural areas of the southeastern US.

John Bruck is an angel investor with Queen City Angels in Cincinnati and currently the Entrepreneur-In-Residence at the Anderson Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation Business Accelerator in the Haslam College of Business at the University of Tennessee Knoxville. His strengths in mentoring new companies are strategic and business planning, supporting and developing leadership and teams, and connecting to resources, including investment capital, necessary for high growth. A specialty is preparing appropriate startups for private investment.

The final session of the series will focus on the importance of Debt-Based Capital. A brief insight to the various types of debt-based capital, how to prepare, time and secure yourself and your business for it.

Currently David is the Chairman of Three Roots Capital’s Board of Directors and the Oak Ridge Area Manager for Pinnacle Financial Partners.
